Gun #4 was the port broadside IX-inch Dahlgren that was used for hot shot.
Lieut. John R. Eggleston was in command of guns 4 and 5
Midshipman H. B. Littlepage was assigned to gun 4.
Littlepage indicates that [John] Hunt was at his gun. On March 8, Hunt makes a remark about the burning grease on the sides of the Virginia made it smell like Hell. On March 9, he jumped into the port and suggested he could put his peacoat around the pilot house of the Monitor.
